6. Long Way Home
(music and lyrics - Peter Eldridge)
Peter Eldridge - vocals and piano
Tony Scherr - bass
Ben Wittman - drums
(recorded live in the studio)

– this one definitely wanders down the jazz path. Another song from the mid 90’s recorded ‘live’ (warts and all, as they say) with Ben Wittman on drums and (I believe) Tony Scherr on bass. I was pretty terrified to do my (first ever) recorded improvised voice/piano solo, but was relatively happy with the outcome. I remember doing this one a lot at a club on the east side in midtown Manhattan called the 5 Spot. I also remember my dad letting out a particularly boisterous ‘oh wow’ after one of the performances of this tune there. Always the scene stealer.

Lyrics

THE LONG WAY HOME
(music and lyrics - Peter Eldridge)

You know you’re going crazy
An itch beneath your skin
A calling of the wild child
To let the games begin

Hold on, you’re on your own now
Take this trip by yourself
Wave to all friends in heaven
While spiraling to hell

When the lightning’s flashing
Go and fly your kite
Wrestle demons in the darkness
Hold on tight
Walk in wild country
Wander into lands unknown

Take the long way home
The long way home
The long way home
The long way home

Regressing in transgressions
Obsessions heaven blest
You thought you learned your lesson
They’ve all been second-guessed

Desires wired and reeling
You’re so close to the edge
No sense defining feelings
While dancing on the ledge

Get the best of lonely
Look it in the eye
Usher in the anger
Never question why
Madness takes its chances
Give yourself the chance to roam

Take the long way home . . . .

(solos)

Get the best of lonely
Look it in the eye
Usher in the anger
Never question why
Madness takes its chances
Give yourself the chance to roam

Take the long way home
The long way home
The long way home . . .
